Homeowners who ask how much AC installation costs usually want one number, and the honest answer is a range. In federal cost estimates, a typical 3-ton central split system in a hot, humid climate came to roughly $5,500 to $6,000 installed, counted in 2022 dollars. Your final price depends on your home and the system you choose, and because equipment prices have risen since then, today's quotes often come in higher. This guide walks through what goes into the price, why it can feel steep, and what Coastal Bend homeowners should factor in along the way. Birdwell A/C & Heating gives free estimates on new systems, so any number you read here can be checked against a quote built for your own house.

How Much Does a New AC Unit Cost With Installation?

Every quote combines two numbers: the price of the equipment and the price of installing it. The equipment is the outdoor condenser, the indoor coil and the parts that come with them. The installed total adds the labor, materials and testing that turn that equipment into a working cooling system.

Federal cost estimates for a 3-ton split system in the hot, humid South show how the two numbers move together. A unit that meets the 2023 federal minimum of 14.3 SEER2 costs about $3,110 for the equipment and $5,520 installed. An ENERGY STAR unit at 15.2 SEER2 costs $3,750 for the equipment and $5,880 installed. A high-efficiency unit at 16.2 SEER2 costs $3,950 for the equipment and $5,980 installed. Each step up in efficiency adds a few hundred dollars, and the work around the equipment stays between about $2,000 and $2,400. These figures are in 2022 dollars and give you a starting line for your own estimate.

Birdwell's AC installation process covers removal of the old equipment when needed, refrigerant lines, electrical connections, drainage, thermostat setup, and the indoor and outdoor components. After the install, the technicians test the system for airflow, cooling performance and operation, then walk you through using and maintaining it. A lower number that leaves one of those items out costs more later, so anyone pricing a new AC unit with installation gains from checking that each one sits inside the total.

What Affects the Price of AC Installation

Five factors move a quote up or down. Knowing them lets you read an estimate line by line and see why two homes on the same street can receive very different totals.

System Size

Capacity is measured in tons or BTUs, and a larger system costs more to buy and install. Oversizing also causes problems: an oversized unit cools the air fast and shuts off before it removes much moisture, which leaves a Corpus Christi home feeling damp and cool at the same time. Birdwell sizes a system from square footage, layout, insulation, windows, ductwork and airflow, so two homes with the same square footage can need different equipment. The 3-ton example above is a common size, and a different tonnage moves the price in either direction.

Efficiency Rating (SEER2)

SEER2 measures how much cooling a system delivers for the electricity it uses over a season, and a higher number means lower operating cost. Texas sits in the federal Southeast region, where split-system central air conditioners installed since January 1, 2023 must reach at least 14.3 SEER2. Stepping from that minimum up to 16.2 SEER2 adds about $460 to the installed price in the federal estimates. Compressor type shifts the price as well. A single-stage compressor runs at full output whenever it is on, a two-stage compressor has a lower and a higher setting, and a variable-speed compressor adjusts its output continuously. Each step brings steadier temperatures and tighter humidity control at a higher price.

System Type

Birdwell installs three kinds of systems: central split systems, heat pumps and ductless mini-splits. A central split system pairs an outdoor condenser with an indoor coil and air handler and sends cool air through ducts. A heat pump uses similar equipment to cool in summer and heat in winter, and it is one of the options covered under Birdwell's heating installation services. A ductless mini-split system needs no ductwork and conditions individual rooms or zones, so its price follows the number of indoor units, the capacity and the line-set length. When a central system is replaced, a new outdoor unit performs best with matched indoor equipment, because the efficiency rating on the label depends on the two working as a pair.

Ductwork Condition

A central system moves air through ducts, so the ducts become part of the price. Sound ducts can often stay in place. Ducts with leaks, damage or poor sizing need repair, sealing or new runs, and each of those adds labor and materials. Leaky ducts also waste the cooling a new system produces. Heating and cooling account for nearly half of a home's energy use, and sealing ducts can improve efficiency by up to 20%, which makes a duct check a worthwhile line in any estimate.

Installation Complexity

Where the equipment goes shapes the labor. An indoor unit in a tight attic takes more time and care to reach than one in a hall closet. Refrigerant line sets run longer when the indoor and outdoor units sit far apart, and old lines sometimes need replacement. An older home may need an electrical upgrade to support the new unit, and the condensate drain needs a proper path, which is harder in some layouts. Because Birdwell's installation includes the refrigerant lines, electrical connections and drainage, these items appear in your estimate once a technician has looked at the house.

Why Is AC Installation So Expensive?

The price covers four things: skilled labor, equipment, a refrigerant transition and the permit and inspection steps.

Labor carries the most weight. Heating, air conditioning and refrigeration mechanics and installers earn a median of $61,010 a year, or $29.33 an hour, and the work happens in hot attics, crawl spaces and tight equipment closets. The occupation has one of the highest injury rates of any job. A crew that is licensed, insured and trained brings costs that show up in the quote, and Birdwell A/C & Heating is licensed and insured in Texas under license TACLB94626E. Skilled work also protects the system, since improper installation can reduce efficiency by up to 30%.

Equipment costs have climbed. The producer price index for air-conditioning, refrigeration and forced air heating equipment rose from 204.2 in January 2020 to 324.82 in August 2026, an increase of about 59%.

Refrigerant is changing too. New residential AC and heat pump systems installed on or after January 1, 2025 fall under an EPA limit of 700 on global warming potential, so manufacturers have built new equipment around lower-GWP refrigerants, and that equipment is part of what you pay for. Systems whose components were all manufactured before that date have no installation compliance date.

Permit and inspection steps add paperwork and scheduling to every replacement. The next section covers what that looks like in Corpus Christi.

What Corpus Christi Homeowners Should Factor In

National cost pages skip the local layer, and on the Coastal Bend that layer matters.

Texas falls in the federal Southeast region, so the higher minimum efficiency applies here. Regional standards are enforced by installation date, and a split system installed since January 1, 2023 must meet 14.3 SEER2 below 45,000 Btu/h and 13.8 SEER2 at 45,000 Btu/h and above. The North region has a lower floor of 13.4 SEER2, so a price from a northern-market article may not describe a Texas install.

The cooling season here is long and humid. In the South, 93% of households use air conditioning, and a Corpus Christi system runs for much of the year. That makes efficiency and correct sizing weigh more on monthly bills, and sizing governs how well the system pulls moisture out of the air.

The City of Corpus Christi requires a mechanical permit to install a new A/C unit and lists HVAC change-outs among its residential permits. Inspections include a rough-in and a final inspection.

AEP Texas runs a Residential Standard Offer Program that pays incentives to participating contractors for high-efficiency split-system and packaged AC and heat pump installs, which require a complete system change-out, and for duct testing and sealing. Customers are not enrolled directly, and funding is limited, so a homeowner can ask any contractor whether it participates and whether funds remain.

The federal 25C tax credit offered up to $600 for a qualifying central air conditioner, and it applied to property placed in service through December 31, 2025. Systems installed in 2026 do not qualify.

How to Keep Your AC Installation Cost in Check

Start with an in-home evaluation. A system sized to the house through a look at the layout, insulation, windows and ductwork avoids the extra cost of oversized equipment, and a quote built on square footage alone can miss those details.

Compare quotes line by line. Check that each one lists removal of the old equipment, refrigerant lines, electrical work, drainage, thermostat setup and testing, so you compare the same scope of work from one company to the next.

Plan the replacement before peak season. A system that is aging, needs frequent repairs or struggles to hold temperature can be replaced on your schedule in spring, which gives you time to compare options. A breakdown in July leaves one day to decide.

Ask about duct sealing at the same time. The crew is already on site, and sealed ducts let the new system deliver the cooling you paid for.

Look at financing. Birdwell offers financing through FTL Finance for qualified customers, with a clear estimate before you choose any payment option.

Regular maintenance protects the investment once it is in. Federal estimates put a central AC's typical life at 11 to 25 years, with professional maintenance costing $20 to $150 a year, and Birdwell's AC maintenance visits include cleaning, testing and an inspection of the whole system.

Your Home Sets the Number

Averages and federal estimates give you a range to budget around, and the only accurate number comes from an evaluation of your house: its size, ducts, attic, electrical service and the efficiency you want. Birdwell A/C & Heating looks at each of those before putting a price on a new system, and the estimate is free.
